Who is behind The Whole Celiac?

I’m Christine Van Wie, a licensed nurse practitioner who also lives with celiac disease. After being diagnosed later in life and navigating the confusion firsthand, I created this space to be the knowledgeable, understanding guide I wish I’d had.

What made you decide to start The Whole Celiac?

I was diagnosed late, after years of unexplained symptoms and almost no guidance beyond “don’t eat gluten.” I started The Whole Celiac so others wouldn’t have to fumble through the same uncertainty alone — sorting fact from misinformation without anyone to turn to.

What's the difference between what you offer and what I'd get from my regular doctor?

A typical doctor’s visit is short, and most providers aren’t celiac specialists — many people leave with little more than a diagnosis and a “go gluten-free.” I offer focused support from someone who understands celiac clinically and personally, so you get real guidance on symptoms, labs, daily life, and what comes next.

What is celiac disease, and how is it different from a gluten sensitivity or wheat allergy?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition: when someone with celiac eats gluten, their immune system attacks the lining of the small intestine, which can cause lasting damage over time. That’s different from non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which causes symptoms without that autoimmune intestinal damage, and from a wheat allergy, which is an allergic reaction to wheat proteins specifically. Understanding which one you’re dealing with matters and drives how a plan of care or your coaching is tailored to your individual needs.

What can I expect during my first appointment?

Your first appointment is about being heard. We’ll talk through your history, symptoms, and any labs or records you have, and start creating a plan of care that fits your real life. This will be adapted whether it is for medical management or Celiac coaching.

What states or regions can you see clients in?

I currently provide medical appointments to clients located in Oregon or Washington. I also offer celiac educational coaching and resources to anyone, anywhere

Do you accept insurance, or is this an out-of-pocket service?

At this time, services are out-of-pocket and not billed directly to insurance. I’m happy to provide documentation you can submit to your HSA or FSA for possible reimbursement, though coverage isn’t guaranteed.

I was just diagnosed — where do I even start with going gluten-free?

Take a breath — you don’t have to figure this out all at once. We’ll start with the essentials (reading labels, avoiding cross-contamination, stocking safe staples) and build from there at a pace that doesn’t feel overwhelming, so going gluten-free becomes manageable instead of overwhelming.

My child was just diagnosed with celiac disease — can you help our family?

Absolutely! I help families navigate everything from school lunches and classroom events to talking with teachers and easing the feeling of being “different.” My goal is for both you and your child to feel confident and supported, not alone.

I feel completely overwhelmed since my diagnosis — is that normal?

Yes, that is completely normal — and you’re far from the only one who’s felt this way. A celiac diagnosis changes daily life in big and small ways, and it’s okay to feel lost at first. Part of my role is to help carry that weight with you, so the path forward feels clearer and a lot less lonely.

What information should I have ready before my first session?

It helps to have information about current medical conditions, any recent lab work or test results, a list of current medications and supplements, and notes on the symptoms that have been bothering you most. Don’t worry if you don’t have everything — we’ll work with whatever you’ve got.

I'm managing okay on my own — what would I gain from working with you?

Even when you’re getting by, celiac care involves ongoing monitoring most people never receive — like tracking labs, nutrient levels, and healing over time. Working together means having an expert in your corner to catch issues early, answer the questions that come up, and help you move from “managing” to genuinely thriving.
